Notes

What a day for the 5wt. I snagged around 5 king salmon, some of them huge, on the 5wt and simply broke off the fly during their first big run. For the one king I landed, I was pretty certain that he was legit as soon as I hooked him because I had more head thrashing instead of the fishing taking off like a torpedo. I was careful to not bend the rod too much and instead played the fish heavy on the reel. The fight lasted probably 10 minutes and concluded with me backing up on the bank and Karl tailing the fish.

Earlier in the afternoon I was standing high on a grassy bank and had spotted a nice looking pink salmon down about 3'. I took me several casts to get the right drift with the egg-sucking leech, but I finally saw the pink move a couple inches and open its mouth to accept the fly. Unfortunately it was able to throw the hook after a brief 3 second fight.

It's incredible the number of HUGE salmon that are stacked in the grass hole.

A guy was fly fishing from the inside of the bend and for awhile, he couldn't keep fish off his fly. It looked like he was fishing a Fat Freddie down deep but I'm not certain. It was impressive to watch him catch fish while Karl, I, and others struggled.
